Sunday Morning Impact

Yesterday was a weird day for us. Harvest did a church-wide service project during the services. Pastor John let all of the adults out early to do a random act of kindness to our city, by handing out water to people in parks. It was a super-hot day, so I know that it was welcomed.
We still had an hour, so we kept everybody together instead of breaking up into small groups. Nathan led worship and did a great job. He also had a few junior highers helping him out. I think it's awesome when there are junior high students on the praise team.
We also played hand towel dodge ball. You tie up a whole bunch of dish towels into knots. The kids start throwing them. Some of the kids get super into it. Some don't. But it's fun to watch. Steven and Mason were the winners.
I had the kids break up into groups and come up with a specific need. They had to come up with a way to meet that need, and money was not an option. I wanted them to dream big. I also wanted them to meet a person's needs holistically. Don't just give a homeless person a home, but what would it take to get them to be able to take care of themselves and others. For instance, they could help them get a skill to get a job, or whatever. The kids only had a few minutes to think this through before parents started showing up to take them to do the service project. A few kids stayed the whole time because their parents were going to a different service or whatever. After the jr. high service, I took a few kids and we got a case of water to hand out. But I got lost on the way to the park in Stone Oak, so we handed out some water to the guys who sell newspapers. They were super grateful. But we didn't hand out that much water. I wish we could have, but it was still fun, and the kids who were with me had a good time.
